From retail to startups to civic life: who gets to understand value, and who gets understood.

A systems view of value

Isabel Carapeta is a European founder, writer and speaker with a systems view of value, behaviour, technology, power and autonomy. Her work sits at one intersection: understanding how systems shape what people value, what they choose, and ultimately, how much power they have over their own lives.

She started where value is most honest: on the shop floor.

Coming from a family deeply rooted in retail, Isabel spent years close to the place where abstract strategies become real decisions. She learned that value is rarely what a company says it is. It is what a person understands they are giving up: money, time, attention, trust, or choice.

Retail taught her to look beneath the transaction. Behind every purchase was a system of incentives, habits, prices, emotions and information. And behind every system was an imbalance: someone usually understood the rules better than someone else.

From retail, she moved into startups, innovation and technology. The question followed her.

If companies could increasingly understand people — their habits, preferences, vulnerabilities and behaviour — what happened to the individual's ability to understand themselves?

She watched a generation of companies become extraordinarily good at turning human behaviour into data, prediction and monetisation. People became easier to model, easier to segment, easier to influence and easier to sell to.

The most valuable asset was no longer necessarily the product. It was the understanding of the customer, and that understanding was rarely returned to the customer.

That asymmetry became the question she could not put down.

So Isabel began building in the other direction.

Simplifyer is one of the first companies born from that thesis: technology designed to give people greater clarity and power over their own money, data and consumption. Not simply to automate decisions, but to make people more conscious of the systems behind them. Not to make people more legible to machines, but more lucid to themselves.

For Isabel, this is not simply a product thesis; it is a question of power because the person who understands the system has an advantage over the person being understood by it.

And the future of technology should not be a world in which companies know increasingly more about people while people know increasingly less about the systems acting on them.

Her work has therefore grown beyond any single company.

Through writing, speaking, entrepreneurship and civic life, Isabel explores what autonomy means in an age where behaviour is increasingly quantified, predicted and monetised. She is particularly interested in the European question: how can individuals — and Europe itself — understand their own value before someone else turns it into a business model?

This is why her work moves between seemingly different territories: consumer behaviour, personal finance, technology, data, entrepreneurship, innovation and public life.

These subjects are different expressions of the same question: who gets to understand value, and who gets understood?

Recognised as a Forbes 30 Under 30, Portuguese Women in Tech Award recipient and Rising Female Award awardee, Isabel is building what she sees as a body of work around that question — through the companies she builds, the ideas she writes about and the conversations she creates.

The ambition is not simply to build better technology. It is to build technology that gives people more agency over the systems that shape them, because lucidity is power.

“I am building a body of work around lucidity because the person who understands the system has more power than the person the system understands.”
